ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the domain of fandom in order to develop a theory of Spimatic fandom in a narrative ecosystem context. It also discusses what happens when a show does end and the unique spin on endings that fandom hints at. The chapter presents a theory of fandom as a key node in a narrative ecosystem model of media studies. It discusses that the narrative ecosystem only works when creators foster human interaction within the narrative system itself; and this is why studying fans becomes a crucial element within the narrative ecosystem. The chapter examines complex interactions with the television series UnREAL in order to fully flesh out the influence of fans at various points in the creation process of a media text. It uses the show UnREAL to plot some moments of fan intervention. Fans and audiences are crucial to developing a larger model of the narrative ecosystem.
