ABSTRACT

In this chapter we elaborate on the necessity and the limitations of different statistics as indicators of gender equality in sport governance and change. We present and discuss the results of a meta-analysis on national data of Olympic NSFs within the European countries, included in this book. The various analyses show large country-related and sport-specific differences, illustrating how historic and current manifestations of gender inequalities in society at large and in sport influence gender equality in sport governance. Moreover, the data suggest that the social status of sport governance positions and the implementation of quotas are contributing factors to the development of gender equality. We argue for more integration of quantitative and qualitative expertise in data collection and analysis and for more intersectional analyses. Improved measurement at the national and the European level, more systematic and comparable monitoring and more in-depth analyses are needed for a better understanding of the development of gender equality in sport leadership.
