ABSTRACT

In Spain, women are seriously underrepresented among those who occupy decision-making positions at the highest levels of sport organisations. Social, political and organisational factors explain this underrepresentation. Boys and men outnumber girls and women among people who practise sport, are interested in (and informed on) sport, watch sport competitions and receive education and training related to sport. Mandatory women’s quotas (with strong sanctions for not meeting them) do not exist in sport management. Specific features of sport organisations make their highest ranks women-unfriendly environments, including a culture of long hours, social networks composed mainly of men and attitudes hostile to women.
