ABSTRACT

For some people old age is signalled by retirement from paid work, or having grandchildren, or getting to a ‘special’ age and celebrating with a party, or feeling rejuvenated by opportunities that weren’t available before—more leisure time, more energy, more freedom, or courage to do what one had always wanted to. For some older people, as they get frailer physically, socially, and/or mentally they begin to feel less resilient and sometimes more melancholy. Old age, per se, is not necessarily a gloomy time despite sometimes being portrayed as such in the media. An older woman, living on her own had become isolated from family and friends. She was introduced to a weekly group called ‘Roll and Stroll’, which is held at the Café on Swansea Bay with a fantastic sea view. She attended the group regularly and was able to meet new people while also having fun exercising.
