ABSTRACT

This paper delves into the particular discourse of the Book of Rites on the relationship between tian di 天地 (“Heaven and Earth”) and humans and argues that this discourse makes the text relevant to the age of globalization in three respects. Through examining the uses of “Heaven-Earth” in the text, this paper is intended to investigate the implications “Heaven-Earth” has in relation to the Confucian awareness of the intrinsic value of natural things and beings and the efforts the author(s)/compilers of the text has/have made in harmonizing the humanistic fundamentals and naturalistic elements into an organic eco-ethics. It is concluded that awareness and efforts are still very much needed today and should be rejuvenated to support contemporary conservation activities in China and beyond.
