ABSTRACT

Garbo's, a lesbian bar at 225 West Broadway in Manhattan, was temporarily closed the week of December 8 when the lesbian management team got involved in a dispute with their male business partners over admission prices. Garbo's primarily served young black lesbians from New Jersey and the boroughs, many of whom followed the Rivera/Quiros team from Network, also a lesbian bar. Network closed over a year ago under similarly unclear circumstances. Another black regular who asked to remain anonymous told GCN that Garbo's had not been doing well for the last few months, with the exception of Friday nights which were "black nights." In the lesbian bars have been accused of maintaining quotas for women of color. Bacall's on Fifth Avenue was closed by lesbian demonstrators who successfully boycotted the bar's discriminatory admission system. All lesbian bars in New York City are owned by business interests outside the lesbian community, with extensive participation by organized crime suspected.
