ABSTRACT

Attorney General Edwin Meese has stopped a $625,000 grant from the Justice Department to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence. According to Patrick Fagen, director of the Child and Family Protection Institute of the Free Congress Foundation, the Coalition "has a very different view on marriage and sexuality than those of the traditional Judeo-Christian values. The feminist agenda puts the woman paramount in a selfish way." Meese's action has drawn criticism from groups that do not usually support progressive causes. Maureen Reagan, the president's daughter and a member of the official US delegation to the Nairobi Women's Conference has attacked Meese in the national press. In 1982, Suzanne Pharr, of the Little Rock, Arkansas Women's Project, co-founded the Lesbian Task Force of the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence. She currently co-chairs the task force with Nan Stoops of Santa Monica, California.
