ABSTRACT

The occasion was the First Tokyo Lesbian and Gay Film Festival. They were all men, very friendly, and pleased with their small, underground festival which had taken place two weeks before. In order to uncover as much as possible about Tokyo gay life in the five days of our short stay, Jim had made an appointment with the gay organization AKA for the following afternoon. AKA detractors demanded that authors denounce the Stance Company on the festival's opening night. For authors’ views they were subjected to a vicious tongue-lashing which included being called "Columbus," "cultural imperialists," and "stupid." That night authors attended the Stance Company's pre-opening party which was totally straight except for one lone dyke festival volunteer—Hiroko Kakifuda, the first Japanese to come out on television. One of the guests at the fête was the straight editor at Magazine House, publishers of the Japanese translation of the novel After Delores.
