ABSTRACT
In the Spring of 1992 I sat down with five friends – Ana Maria Simo, Anne-Christine D’Adesky, Maxine Wolfe, Marie Honan, and Ann MaGuire – in Ana’s living room to talk about starting a lesbian direct action group. We were each extremely politically experienced, with varied backgrounds in activist and community based organizing. We decided to approach this new group with great precision. We chose the name, the Lesbian Avengers. Ana’s son, Thomas, came up with a logo – an old fashioned bomb with a lit fuse. We debated what the first action should be. Our original idea was to parachute into Whitney Houston’s wedding. But we ended up deciding on an action on the first day of school in District 24, the Queens school district leading the viciously anti-gay battle against the recently proposed multicultural curriculum. Then, in June, on Gay Pride Sunday, the six of us, with Kathryn Thomas and Debby Karpel, handed out 8,000 lime green club cards. They said:
WE WANT REVENGE AND WE WANT IT NOW! LESBIANS! DYKES! GAY WOMEN!
There are many more lesbians in this world than men like George Bush. But cold-blooded liars like him have all the power.
