ABSTRACT

Forensic entomology has been utilized in various aspects of human medicolegal death investigation since thirteenth-century China. Forensic entomology is the intersection between arthropod science and the judicial system. While forensic entomology is any intersection between entomology and the judicial system, wildlife forensic entomology is a specific subset of that science. The primary forensically important insects are the Diptera, or the true flies. Due to the nature of the cranial structure, head trauma is generally easily recognized, and often first reported by the forensic pathologist or anthropologist. Wounds of this nature in other regions of the body would change the typical head-down decomposition pattern, however, and result in maggot masses in unexpected places. Knowledge of the range and distribution of various insects is important when it comes to forensic science analysis, since it can speak to the potential location of death.
