ABSTRACT

This chapter considers the changing context of organisations, the management of these organisations and their use of information technology in the future. It provides two views about tomorrow’s organisations and their environment. The chapter discusses the implementation of information technology in the business processes of a Dutch engineering construction company. It also discusses the case of an engineering and construction company, confronted with the implementation of new information technology in the primary business functions. The chapter explains computer-integrated manufacturing, to improve operational, organisational and strategic responsiveness. It also considers the case from an information management perspective. In evaluating managers’ work in the field of information management, the chapter highlights some specific problem areas identified during the case study. Some specific educational needs were ‘how to do’ knowledge about project management, standard software selection, communication skills and how to get software development accountable.
