ABSTRACT

Within this decade it is the voices of the New Right, and others close to the government which appear to have most greatly influenced government thinking about teacher education and the content of reforms. For the government, one way of attempting to bring about a more subject-centred approach to primary teaching is through reforms of Initial Teacher Training (ITT). It is also likely that it will be teachers rather than higher education institution (HEI) tutors who will be responsible for mentoring aspects of subject knowledge of the students on placement in their schools. It is this – mentoring subject knowledge in the primary school – that became the focus of the research at the University of Wales Swansea. The project was seen as an opportunity to make an initial exploration of the implications and consequences of the process of mentoring subject knowledge.
