ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a report that is concerned with the way in which mentoring is arranged within the schools. Keele has had a partnership arrangement with about thirty schools for the past three years and it was becoming clear following student evaluation that there was a great deal of variation in the way the schools in the partnership managed student involvement. The impact of the new arrangements on all elements of the school community–pupils, other staff, parents and in some schools, governors, affects attitudes. For the professional mentors there is perhaps more career advantage in that the involvement with staff development practices, the management of complex administrative arrangements and the development of personal and group relationships provides important evidence for future management potential. The study reports indicate the value for money consequent upon a shift of responsibilities.
