ABSTRACT

Gomes Eannes de Azurara has said that the Infante Dom Henrique sent an expedition to the Canary Isles; and he has told how after the Portuguese ships went thither and brought back captives. Johann de Botancor having spent all the money he had brought, and his supplies being exhausted, was obliged to return to his country, intending ere long to return and conquer the other islands. He left a nephew of his, called Maciote, as captain of the three islands already conquered. But Johann de Botancor did not return; some say that he was prevented by grave maladies; others relate that he could not do so because the King of France required his services to aid him in the wars which he had undertaken. And the aforesaid Maciote remained a long time in the Canary Isles; then he went to the island of Madeira.
