ABSTRACT

This chapter explores a few domains affecting and affected by mobile communication on a United States and international level. Mobile communication adds new twists to the perennial contest over privacy and anonymity versus disclosure and monitoring owing to locational information generated by the use of mobile communication devices and networks. The chapter looks at the areas of privacy, anonymity and publicity, m-government and m-voting, emergency notification, parents and children with mobile phones, m-education and m-healthcare. In developed countries, mobile banking or m-banking most often means having access to one's bank account while on the move. As the number of children with mobile phones increases so does the plethora of parental control features offered by cell phone companies. Mobile-enabled government, or m-government, holds great promise to solve the many ills as governmental entities seek to be more responsive to citizen needs and operate more efficiently and effectively.
