ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the problem of recruiting new members—a problem which is also endemic to all voluntary associations but which stems not from the process of delegation but rather from the inherent nature of organizations themselves. "Volunteering" has been classified as a trigger event; it is more accurately described as a residual category which includes all Volunteers who said that no one had asked them to join the Foundation, but who joined on their own initiative. The obligations attendants upon organizational relationships have been put to maximum use by defining cooperation with Foundation activities as a responsibility of another community organization. The concept "role relationship" is derived from a consideration of society as a system comprised of myriads of interpersonal relationships. In the case of invitations which invoke the obligations attendant upon community relationships, an appeal is made not to an individual's sense of duty toward his friends, or toward an organization, but rather toward the community at large.
