ABSTRACT

The recruit in the P. E. C. laboratory becomes a member of a work group and proceeds along one of four career pathways. First, he may remain devoted to research and a scientific professional career and shape his career goals in this direction. Second, he may become interested in administration and try to steer his career up the administrative ladder. Third, he may be interested in research but turn to administration because he sees a limited financial and status future for himself in research. Fourth, he might turn to administration because he cannot compete in research with his colleagues. In his early years in the laboratory the scientist remains devoted to the scientific career goals which he acquired as a graduate student. For selected members of the research staff, administrative opportunities compete with research as a career goal. The career-minded scientist concentrates and specializes in a career in the P. E. C. laboratory.
