ABSTRACT

The organizational career has several relationships with society at large and the social units within society. Professor Wilensky discusses the stability and integration effect of organizational careers on society in general and particularly on its government, educational and financial institutions, and on the family with respect to its mobility and life style. Careers, though they grip only a minority of the labour force, are a major source of stability for modern society, as Weber, Mannheim, and many others have noted. Each of the dimensions of career is related to life style and thus to the types and levels of integration of persons and groups into community and society. Certain attributes of a class of large, complex organizations and of one type of career shape the work behaviour and life style of middle managers and technicians. The opportunity for stable careers both attracts and shapes men who value security and play it safe.
