ABSTRACT

An expert's sense of security in an organization with no system of tenure, such as a union, is in part dependent upon his alternative employment opportunities, the replaceability of his skills, and his "connections" or "base" in or out of the organization. If these objective factors contribute to a sense of security, and if a sense of security is related to influence, we would expect the High Influence experts to be in a favorable market position. The sense of insecurity this respondent feels might continue, even if there were considerable chance to move into the nonunion world at comparable salaries in similar jobs. Only one in sixteen High Influence cases admits he has had no job offers since he has been working for a union, but six in twenty-one of the Medium Influence cases and twenty-five in seventy-two of the Medium Influence cases so indicate.
