His research interests include education in the antebellum South, history of science and its relationship to the development of schools, colleges, and universities, and the intersection between educational policy and student rights. His first book, a social and intellectual biography of William Barton Rogers, conceptual founder of MIT, will be published by Johns Hopkins University Press in 2008.
