ABSTRACT

The assault on manners and civility is simply a psychological reflex of that larger cultural drive. For what is presented as uniquely Jewish; the revolt against civility is, in fact, the general posture of all writers, scholars, and publics in search of liberation. The assault on manners and civility is simply a psychological reflex of that larger cultural drive. The Cuddihy book is divided into four parts. The first part contains thirteen chapters centering upon Freud and the neo-Freudian Wilhelm Reich. The second part has four chapters on Karl Marx and one on Claude Lévi-Strauss. The third part of Cuddihys book, entitled 'The Demeaned Jewish Intellectuals: Ideologists of Delayed Modernization', is comprised of two chapters. The final section is comprised of two chapters, which reduce essentially to several book reviews and newspaper aphorisms. The final chapter, 'Modernity, Jewry, Christianity', by far the most ambitious and far ranging, is also the least candid.
