ABSTRACT

The ideology of self-identified white nationalists is fixated on race and its importance as an in-group signifier. This segment of the population is set apart from many mainstream whites because the issue of group position based on race permeates their discourse and drives their political motivations. One of the assumptions of Blumer's group position model is the subjective image of where the in-group stands or, more importantly, should stand, in relation to the out-group. Blumer's theory also deals with the proprietary claim to privilege and advantage by the dominant group. Blumer's fourth element regarding fear and suspicion of minority groups was measured by Q10, which stated that minority groups in America demand too much. The Southern Poverty Law Center, another watchdog group, reported that Billy Roper wanted his group to become an umbrella for various extremist organizations such as Volksfront and Blood and Honour; however, he had little success in achieving this goal.
