ABSTRACT

This chapter brings together themes regarding political consumerism as a site for ethics and action. It elucidates how the study of political consumerism challenges current concepts in the social sciences, particularly political participation. The chapter shows they are having an effect on global business. It offers poignant examples of how political consumerism can go wrong. The chapter teaches lessons about the phenomenon of political consumerism. It offers sound advice for an initial assessment of the potentials of political consumerism globally. More research is necessary to distinguish the differences between consumer choice as an agenda-setting political action and purchases that take place in an unreflective manner. One of the important questions that arise in the context of political consumerism is whether it is a political phenomenon and a potentially new form of political participation. Political consumerism's strength is the opportunity it provides for citizens to work with central political problems of global magnitude in a hands-on, everyday way.
