ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author discusses her own journeys in public sociology. She examines five aspects: what brought her to this approach, what the author have tried to do in terms of research, some of her efforts to teach public sociology, some of the difficulties one confronts, and why she think it contributes to the discipline. With the emergence of public sociology, the author feels a new freedom to show herself fearlessly. She considers the niche the author finds herself in, namely "organic public sociology". In contrast, with organic public sociology the sociologist works in close connection with a visible, thick, active, local and often counter-public. In general, the author has tried to conduct research that can be of value to the labor movement. She learned a heap about social struggle, strategy, and union politics. Speaking only for herself, the author believes that her political involvements have made her a better sociologist.
