ABSTRACT

The device of alternating the forms of questionnaire amongst the people taking part was meant to increase the likelihood that people completing the check-list questionnaire on the one hand and those completing the open response questionnaire on the other were closely comparable. People completing the open response questionnaire had as much time for this as they wanted and in any case the phenomenon is apparent in the earlier part of the questionnaire as well as in the later part. In the open response questionnaire there was ample lined space for the entry of publications. A test administrator controlled the completion of the questionnaires and special care was taken to see that the completion process was not stopped before respondents had written all they could. Throughout the statement of results the term 'test items' will be used to refer to the items presented in the check-list questionnaire.
