ABSTRACT

During most of the post-World War II years, the staff of the President has included a Science Advisor, currently the Director of the Office of Science and Technology Policy. This chapter summarizes the reasons for maintaining the post of Science Advisor and bolstering it with back-up staff. The appointee for Advisor and his agility in avoiding the horns of that dilemma will be the keys to success. He or she should be skilled in analysis as well as in science or engineering, possess a passion for getting at the facts, and be willing to sublimate ego and subordinate personal views to play honest information broker for respected person. Having recruited a Science Advisor, one should lay down some marching orders that are listed. Aside from procedures, there are also some general guideposts. The chapter lists these points.
