ABSTRACT

The status of black women is connected with the status of black communities—of black men and black children. But a specific look at black women's status is warranted at this time, especially since researchers have, all too frequently, studied men who are black and women who are white, with the status of black women an invisible one. It is important for one to note that the focus on the status of black women is not at all meant to divert attention from the very drastic problems that face the total black community. Instead, the effort is meant to talk about ways one can strengthen the status of the black community, both now and in the future. The majority of black children, at this time, live in families headed by black women. These children share their mother's jeopardy as their future options are limited by the present constraints their mothers face.
