The aim of the Nazi propaganda thrust, as far as the Jews are concerned, was first separation of the Jews from the bulk of the population, atomization within the group and finally, after moral resistance had broken down, physical destruction. The bulk of the adherents of the former liberal parties had enthusiastically defected to the Nazis. John K. Dickinson recreates out of scattered documents, both printed and personal, as well as from laborious inter views with 172 persons a revealingly intimate picture of how Jew and Gentile alike in the fateful 1920s and 1930s slid imperceptibly, step by step, into the abyss of destruction.
