ABSTRACT

Rudolf Hess can be regarded as a symbol of the way which German youth traveled in the twenties. He had joined the army before he was able to get himself a proper education, and Germany's unexpected defeat had meant a deep frustration of his hopes. Hess belongs to the war torn generation although, after the Bierkeller putsch of 1923, he tried seriously to complete his education. The personality structure of Hess is interesting in a twofold sense, in terms of a history of thought as well as in a sociological setting. Hess was a member of the Thule society which under the disguise of studying the Saga of the ancient North, planned to assassinate the Prime Minister and other members of the then ruling party of Bavaria. Rudolf Hess is to be taken much more seriously and yet he belongs to the same war-torn generation.
