ABSTRACT

In this chapter, author explores how movements and counter movements (CM) interact. Beyond static description, he attempted to describe the dynamics or processes of countermovement mobilization. One aspect of the problem is to account for the speed of mobilization of the countermovement. The course of the war also affects a state's ability to mobilize resources. In the course of the war, a state may use up all of its resources, or through alliances gain added resources. Social movement SM and CM may undergo a similar process. The key word in the definition of CM is opposition. For a framework to analyze opposition and processes author turn to conflict theory and its various forms. Movement-counter movemen M/CM interaction is a kind of intergroup or intercollectivity conflict. In a complex polity there are a wide variety of M/CM authority relations. Finally, the conclusion addresses the place of M/CM interaction in the larger historical and cultural setting.
