ABSTRACT

This chapter explores if and how universities can play a role to harness expertise, promote research, teaching, and community engagement and performs capacity building in the field of sport for development and peace. The United Nations is one organization increasingly looking at sports as tool for peacebuilding and development, as are national governmental organizations, CBOs, business, and universities. The chapter considers the historical context of peace, education, and sport in South Africa before looking at the role, mission, and mandate of the university with regard to sports, development, and peace. The University of the Western Cape in South Africa, with its established Interdisciplinary Centre of Excellence in Sports Science and Development, will serve as an example. The chapter argues that a brief review of developments in the education sector may be helpful to establish and looks at the role of educational institutions in South Africa.
