ABSTRACT

Physics is surely the place where one expects few surprises as one goes from part to whole. Most exploration in physics is directed the other way, and it has taken us into the domain of the elementary particles, where, at the moment, it seems the deepest questions lie. But, there are interesting and difficult problems in physics which are presented as going from part to whole. It is this family that I would like to review. Indeed, I would like to pose, in the context of physics, the question which I assume this title evokes in all the subjects represented in this series. The question is: Is the behavior of the whole system richer in any essential way than the behavior of its parts?
