ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses some epistemological questions regarding the historical method and interpretation of broadcasting history, in particular, an analysis of the historical and theoretical usefulness of autobiography in understanding the past. The focus for thinking about such issues is the cultural and oral history of sports broadcasting by the British Broadcasting Corporation with a specific focus on the codes and practice of running commentary. Media history is a burgeoning area of enquiry within the field of media studies, and it influences the ways in which we think about contemporary transformations in media, society, and culture. Careers in sports broadcasting hold a particular fascination because so few people hold such positions, and yet many more feel they could do a better job. Finally, autobiography and biography can be viewed as literary works. As a literary pursuit, the writing of autobiography has particular traits and generic conventions, and the texts of sports commentators are no different in this respect.
