A man of reason and sensibility, Irwin Edman remained an unfaltering optimist throughout his life, equally stalwart in his belief that truth is the only master worth serving. During his fourteen years as a member of the American Scholar Editorial Board, he brought a grace and wit to the magazine that left their mark long after his death in 1954.
