ABSTRACT

The Syrian press is an extremely valuable unexplored source for study of the Armenian Genocide. While news of the Armenian deportations and persecutions appeared in the newspapers and periodicals of many countries, the Syrian press benefited uniquely from the region's location within the Ottoman Empire. When considering that Syria was under Turkish rule and subject to press censorship during the period of the Armenian Genocide, it is all the more remarkable that the Syrian news media described the Turkish massacres and deportations of Armenians so poignantly and in such an uncompromising fashion. The Syrian press laid responsibility for the genocide on the commitment of the Young Turks to the ideology of Pan-Turkism and the preexisting general disdain for Armenians in Turkish society. The press also considered the impact of the Armenian Genocide on the Ottoman Arab population as it reported on the massacres, expulsions, and ultimate resettlement of the Armenian deportees and survivors in the Arab provinces.
