ABSTRACT

This chapter explores a list of the institutions or units of institutions which house the "criminally insane" and by surveying the psychologists' concept of their role in such agencies, including especial emphasis on psychotherapeutic functions. The Directors of Mental Health were very cooperative in forwarding information on the "criminally insane" in their respective states. The administrations' view on the subject of the protection of the public in relation to the discharge of patients and that of the psychologists do not closely coincide. In attempting to determine what factors entered into the attitude of administrations toward psychotherapy conducted by psychologists, comparisons were made between those institutions reporting an attitude of "strong approval" as contrasted to those which only "approved". There has been a marked growth in the number of psychologists and psychological services rendered in agencies for the treatment of the "criminally insane," paralleling the growth of the profession of psychology as a whole.
