ABSTRACT

Until recently, only Nazis and Stalinists spoke of “political correctness.” It is indeed a purely totalitarian concept. It asserts the right of those in power to suppress all but the party line’s official lies. But though the term is new in American usage, the present try to beat academia into the conformity of political correctness is not the first but the second such attempt in recent U.S. history. The first one was made by the Stalinists in the 1930s and early 1940s.
