ABSTRACT
The standard festschrift frequently begins with a surface account of the honoree’s life and times, briskly proceeding to predictably appreciative essays extolling his contributions to the stock of knowledge. This approach is regrettably antibiographic in spirit and consequence; it decontextualizes scholarship and thereby conceals from celebrants and readers alike the concrete circumstances that have shaped an exceptional scholar.
