ABSTRACT

In 1978, the reprint of the Life Space study with a comprehensive introduction by Zinnecker was published by Pad. Extra Buchverlag, located in Bensheim, Germany. Verbal and visual approaches were used to illustrate the term “Umleben.” Former Barmbek children reminisced about their world in the streets. They talked about the single streets and backyards that were densely populated by children, and about their attempts to make the terrain their turf. In 1998, Zinnecker was able to revise his impression. He notes: Martha Muchow and her Life Space study are once again well-known at home and abroad. In the new edition the reprint format is disregarded old German print is troublesome to younger readers, which underscores the historical gap. The 1998 edition of the Life Space study is out of print, and Zinnecker died in 2011. The key idea of the Life Space study is the relationship between subject and object, “child” and “space,” respectively.
