ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a unique opportunity to examine many of the salient events and experiences that have influenced John over the years. It reviews Braithwaite's theory of reintegrative shaming and, through the use of an interview with John, places his academic theorizing into the broader story of his life. The chapter provides a sketch of the early influences on John growing up in Australia, as well as the events and experiences that occurred later in his life, including those from the early stages of his professional career. It explores some of the major events and circumstances that have influenced him professionally as well as various intellectual influences that have shaped his thinking and scholarship. The chapter describes John's perceptions of the future of restorative justice and the direction for criminology. John Braithwaite is both surprised and reasonably pleased with the extent of progress of research on restorative justice and responsive regulation.
