ABSTRACT

Children respond differently to the various aids can offer at the point. Some children respond rather quickly to the mention of cartoons on television, a downstairs activity that does not require much interaction with other children. One game children respond to most positively at this time of day involves the counselors timing the child to see how long it takes for him to put on a particular article of clothing. During the wake-up period, the children progress from a primary investment in body awareness, inner thoughts, dream remnants, and encapsulation from the outside world to a direct confrontation with the tasks of dressing, eating breakfast, and moving off to school. If the child-care worker tries to urge the child too rapidly or if he interprets this behavior to the child as simply a "stalling technique," he is likely to encounter management difficulties with the child later in the morning route.
