ABSTRACT

According to Florence Howe, the goal of the press has always been to change education through publications, to reach people with stories of women's lives, and to change the books children read in schools and libraries. The Feminist Press is an educational and publishing corporation, and the only nonprofit, tax-exempt organization concerned with publishing feminist books on a pre-school through adult level. De Markievicz was an Irish revolutionary who fought for the liberation of Ireland and of women in the early twentieth century. The Clearinghouse on Women's Studies was the first education project the press developed. Carol Ahlum, a Feminist Press staff member, and Florence Howe organized the clearinghouse to collect information and resources on women's studies at the college level. The impact of the press on individuals is easier to measure and perhaps is even more important than statistics. The press has had a pronounced effect on many people closely involved with it, as well as on its audience.
