ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses two main issues related to the stability of the meaning of work related values: First, whether the same abstract meaning of work constructs explain the same observed indicators both longitudinally and cross-sectionally. Second, whether the same abstract constructs remain stable cross time. The meaning of work project is perhaps the "most empirically rigorous research ever undertaken to understand, both within and between countries, the meanings people attach to their work roles". The chapter provides some pertinent background information concerning the state of Israeli society. The comparison group sample was subjected to a confirmatory factor analysis using the LISREL method, to examine the similarity of its meaning of work structure in comparison to the matched samples across time from 1981 to 1993. The chapter presents the structure of the meaning of work for the comparison group sample.
