ABSTRACT

Wyoming is unique in the amount of support the state provides to education. There have been sustained decisions to maintain only one public university and to work with other states to provide medical and dental education. University of Wyoming (UW) Medical Education includes a program that has medical students starting in Wyoming and finishing their education at the University of Washington Medical School in Seattle (UWSOM) through the WWAMI (Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, and Idaho) program. Students that complete the four-year medical education program receive their doctor of medicine degree (MD) from UWSOM. The state expectation is that the legislature will hold true to the state constitution of having "as nearly free as possible" tuition costs. The Second World War brought rationing, price controls, and an increase in the value and price of oil, so this era was a boom for Wyoming.
