ABSTRACT

Since the publication of the paper 1 outlining a technique for the measurement of trihalomethane (THM) precursors, the technique has been used and discussed by many authors and was included as a tentative method (No. 5710) in the 17th edition of Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Waste Water. 2 This technique to measure total trihalomethane (TTHM)precursor called for measuring the difference between the TTHM concentration at the beginning and the end of a test in which a sample is first dosed with enough free chlorine to maintain a free chlorine residual throughout the test and then stored under selected conditions of temperature and pH for a selected time (commonly called the incubation time). The choice of incubation conditions was site specific. The resulting parameter was called the trihalomethane formation potential (THMFP).
