ABSTRACT

Bromate is a disinfection by-product of the ozonation of bromide-containing waters. Kurokawa et al. 1 have shown a carcinogenic effect of bromate in animal experiments which has created a need for regulating this compound in drinking water. The discussion of a regulatory standard for bromate in drinking water is governed by three main factors: (1) toxicity of bromate, (2) detection limit in a natural water matrix, and (3) disinfection safety criteria.
