ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the issues connected with teacher education in Europe and the main characteristics of European teachers. Special attention is given to the European guidelines on teacher education and particularly to the induction phase of teacher development. Teacher education is presented as a continuum: from Initial Teacher Education through induction phase into profession to continuous professional teacher development. The quality of teacher education is perceived as one of the most important factors influencing the quality of teachers with direct implications on student learning and their educational achievements and outcomes. This chapter contributes to a long-standing debate on teacher education in Europe and the competences that enable teachers to act as European teachers and to work in the international education environment.
