ABSTRACT

The process of planning for adult life for an individual with ASD involves providing attention to numerous areas, including those that are educational, vocational, independent-living, and social in nature. Consequently, transitioning to adulthood can be a challenging phase of life for most individuals. This is especially true for youth with ASD, a group that often encounters unequal opportunities in areas of educational and vocational transition in comparison to neurotypical adolescents. In Chapter 17, the author reviews common struggles that can occur when individuals with ASD transition into early adulthood. Recommendations are made to help clinicians help parents with their child’s life events such as entering college or the job market.
