ABSTRACT

Autism spectrum disorder affects not only those individuals who have been diagnosed but their parents and primary caregivers as well. This chapter explores common ASD-related stressors and how they impact parents raising children with ASD, with particular attention paid to parents’ experiences of ambiguous loss, lack of resources, child behavioral concerns, and social stigma. With these unique ASD-related stressors in mind, this chapter also highlights ways in which parents, both as individuals and together with their spouses/partners, cope with all that comes along with caring for a child on the autism spectrum.
