ABSTRACT

The global trend of smart city implementation has pushed major investments towards the deployment of smart technologies in the urban area trying to bridge the gap existing between the number of events occurred in the city and the level of awareness of the operators to manage them properly. This chapter discusses how application of smart technologies guided by a holistic view of urban resilience, is able to sustain the city adaptive cycle needed to cope with emerging threats. There is a call to move from the smart city to the smart resilient city paradigm, looking beyond the simple smart technology deployment. In this regard “Resilience thinking” offers a different way of understanding the city and a new approach to managing resources including Information and Communication Technology. Smart cities are starting to enhance situational awareness by improving its sentient capacity, communication, connectivity, user interfaces, and data analytics.
